The Red Cross launched the exhibition A Moment Alone in León, Spain, which will tour the rest of the country. Focused on the pressing issue of unwanted solitude, a phenomenon increasingly affecting Western societies, it aims to raise awareness about the multifaceted nature of solitude, spanning across generations and genders.

The exhibit highlights how young people are experiencing extreme levels of isolation due to the pervasive influence of social media, which paradoxically connects and separates individuals. It also sheds light on the elderly population, who often face loneliness as traditional family roles evolve and social structures have deteriorated over the past few decades. New realities also emerge for people in adulthood with the increase of single parenting and the struggle to overcome difficulties in loneliness. The exhibit also showcases examples of the many circumstances that can bring people to the verge of social exclusion.

Despite Spain's historically strong family ties, this exhibition emphasizes the societal changes which have led to a rise in solitude among both the young and the old, impacting more than 6.5 million people in Spain today.

Through a documentary narrative, interactive displays, expert interviews and fiction short films, the exhibition introduces personal stories, statistics, and potential solutions to combat this growing issue. The aim is not only to make the audience aware, but to inspire the community to take action and support new and existing systems to alleviate the effects of unwanted solitude .

Unwanted loneliness is not the consequence of personal failure. Rather, it is a symptom that something is not working in the model of society in which we are immersed, where authentic and meaningful human contact is increasingly difficult.
